Project duration: 01. October 2005 to 30. September 2008
The BASKI-project is an EU funded innovative project which develops a Basic Skills Training Model for people with disabilities and their carers. The project-partnership consists of eight partners from six countries working together to improve the situation of adults with disabilities. The BASKI-project uses good practice experiences from other Socrates-projects with similar contents. The results of these projects will be analysed, transferred and modified to different national settings. A new methodical didactic approach in the compilation of the curricula and the methodical and didactic materials by the inclusion of the target group (learner-centred) is used by the BASKI-project. Through this the needs of the disabled people can be addressed directly. And disabled people have the possibility to decide how they want to achieve self-determination. By the inclusion of the target group in the making up of the curricula and the methodical didactic materials a high effectiveness and long-term sustainability is to be achieved. BASKI will have impact in the institutions within the disability sector even before the project ends in October 2008.
The composition of the partnership in the BASKI-project aims to promote the relationship between the new candidate countries (BG), the new existing members (HU, PL) and the remaining existing member states of the EU. View the Partners
back to ContentsAdults without disabilities have the natural ability to live a self-determined life. They are able to articulate needs and wishes in private and professional life, they can determine and follow personal goals according to their particular situation and they are able to obtain help and support when necessary.
In people with disabilities this important personal ability is often lacking; or, due to their motor, cognitive, sensory, and emotional difficulties it is much more difficult to develop. More heteronomy than self-determination is especially experienced by institutionalised people with disabilities; they have to live and work with a high level of dependence. The Basic Skills Training Model takes the principle of equal opportunities into account and leads institutionalised and hospitalised people with disabilities to an appropriate degree of self-determination and prepares them for active participation in society.
back to ContentsThe Basic Skills Training Model shall on the one hand support the target group of people with disabilities in a special BASKI – Training by stimulating a process of development so that they are able to live a self-deter minded life, and on the other hand serve and accompany institutions in the disability sector like sheltered workshops and assisted living programmes who care for the target group.
The interaction between the BASKI-Training and the accompanied Coaching of social institutions is a central theme of the project.
back to ContentsThe Basic Skills Training Model consists of three main parts:
The BASKI-Training is a special course for adult individuals with a medium to high level of care that live or work in diverse institutions in the disability sector (like sheltered employment programmes, residential services, supported housing schemes,...). With the BASKI–Training the existing basic skills of people with disabilities are to be broadened and consolidated; new behavioural, articulation and reaction alternatives are to be introduced, practised and integrated into the daily work and living routines of the clients. Possible solutions and actions will be learned. The psychological health, increased competence, satisfaction and self-determination of the clients in the occupational and residential areas are to be ensured. The training takes place in small groups which bear reference to mutual topics (modules) and are to be formed and designed by the group.
The basic skills include for example:
A written curriculum for the BASKI-Training and special innovative methodical/didactic material should support and motivate trainers in carrying out a BASKI-Training for people with disabilities. It contains suggestions for topics, examples of methodical-didactic material and proposals for the training process.
Adult people with disabilities who are:
Parallel to the BASKI-Training the BASKI-Coaching supports the institution staff in preparing the living- working environment of the people with disabilities, so that the clients can put what they have learned from the BASKI-Training in to practice in their daily lives. Here a professional adviser, the institution coach, works specially with the carers of the participating client group, supports and advises them during the change and development processes. In regularly sessions the carers are to be coached, supported and supervised in the further development of the subject of self-determination. A great emphasis is to be placed on the mental health of all involved (clients and staff).
For professionals in the social/educational/psychological sector and who are interested in the BASKI–Training or in the BASKI-Coaching two qualification programmes namely "Train the Trainer" and "European Counsellor" are offered.
Along with basic knowledge from the group dynamics sessions for people with disabilities and special training and coaching skills, the trainees should obtain concrete support for the assistance of BASKI-Training groups (Train the Trainer) and for the coaching of institutions (European Counsellor).
The concrete contents and the process of the educational programmes are defined in the Train the Trainer Curriculum and the European Counsellor Curriculum.
Professionals in the social/educational/psychological sector who have experiences in the fields of counselling, assistance or disability care. Personal requirements include communication skills, reflection skills, flexibility, respectful and appreciative attitude toward people with and without disabilities.
back to ContentsThe project's direct target group are individuals with mental or multiple disabilities (medium to high level of assistance) who are cared for in organisations in the disability sector (sheltered workshops, assisted living). Due to the fact that this target group includes many people with massive impairments in the cognitive, sensory, motor and emotional areas, their ability to act is severely limited and they experience a much higher level of heteronomy than self-determination in the living and working areas. Within the framework of the project basic skills are to be trained and the process of self-determination is to be professionally supported. A further direct target group of the project is professionals in psychosocial counselling. Within the framework of the project this target group shall gain an additional qualification whereby a special field of activity is to be developed – group coaching and the support of people with learning or multiple disabilities - and the coaching and support of personnel in institutions in the disability sector. Indirect users of the project are institutions in the disability sector that through the Basic Skills Training Model could invest in human resources and promote sustainability in the care.
back to ContentsThe Basic Skills Trainings Model includes a Handbook containing country specific dates, test and evaluation reports and further detailed information to the Basic Skills Training Model, a Curriculum for the BASKI-Training for people with mental or multiple disabilities in small groups, methodical/didactic material developed to support communication, learning and group processes, two Curricula for the BASKI Educational Training addressing professionals in psychosocial counselling (Train the Trainer and European Counsellor).
All the products will be available in English, Bulgarian, German, Greek, Hungarian and Polish.
